The short introduction of our town
This beautiful town, Győr, which is
full of architectural and historical mementos, can be found halfway
between Vienna and Budapest. Győr is „the town of encounters”. Arrabona
in the Roman times lay in the Western gate of Austria, its northern
neighbour was Slovakia, that is how it could become a commercial centre,
already in the early times.
Győr has a population of 130,000
people, it is an extremely fast developing university town. It has
significant economic and industrial investments, besides this it is a
famous diocese centre. Győr is the episcopal see of the Catholic and the
Lutheran church, the centre of the Transdanubian Unitarian parish
church. The Cathedral in Győr was heaved to the rank of a basilica by
John Paul II. in 1997.
Our settlement still preserves the
beautiful masterpieces of Baroque architecture. Győr received the Europe
Award from the protection of monuments as an acknowledgement for the
reconstruction of the baroque downtown.
The rivers of the town,
the Mosoni Danube, rivers Rába and Rábca have always been attractive
destinations for those who want to relax and love water sports. The
thermal bath offers numerous wellness programmes for its rising number
of visitors both in the summer and in winter.
The pedestrian
precinct in the downtown, the romantic riverbank, the Dunakapu square,
the discovery of Radó Island, and the La Maréda restaurant offering a
special culinary experience make the days spent in our town
unforgettable.
Győr is deservedly famous for its many-coloured,
diverse cultural programmes and festivals, whose yearly widening range
and high artistic value attract more and more visitors to our town.
We
are proud of our worldwide famous ballet company, the performances of
Győr Ballet. The every year renewed programmes of the National Theatre
of Győr and the epoch-making performances of the Philharmonic Orchestra
also make us proud.
Our town houses some works of Miklós Borsos
sculptor and Margit Kovács ceramist. The journalist and art collector
Imre Patkó collected the works of 20th century painters and graphic
artists – his inheritance can be seen in the „Vastuskós” House.
The
local history and ethnic collection of the 150 year-old János Xantus
Museum, the exhibitions of the Town Art Gallery, the programmes of the
Rómer Hall, and also its concerts popular with young people and last but
not least the programmes for children (the zoo, the House of Children
and the „Vaskakas” (Iron Cock) Puppet Theatre) make the days spent here
happy, complete and unforgettable for everyone, all age groups.
Dear Guests!
We would like to welcome you in our town, too!
